Life is a game

I made these art journal pages for a class with Lifebook 2013 and then turned around and taught a class using the same idea.  Life is a game...enjoy the journey!

This was a lot of fun to create but I have issues with the way the paper is 'puffing up!'
This is a multimedia paper book but  I think the paper is too thin for what I want to do with it but I am too cheap to throw it out...besides the folks in my class have already bought a similar book to use.  I tried inking and making the pages then gluing them in the book that's this example...  Before that I had inked and made the pages then glued the next blank page to the back so they are doubled up...this example.
I like the full page coverage of the ink and it seems to be less wrinkled so I think I will go back to this way of doing it.  Any suggestions, tips?

  1. Hi, This is Colleen from The Outlawz, I followed your link because you had nurse in your blog title and I love to check out other nurses blogs. I too have worked as a critical care nurse in ER, ICU, CCU, NCCU and Pre and post op. I had to quit due to fibromyalgia. Mostly what they call "brain fog" and unbearable pain at times. I started a new diet and if you write me, I will let you know how it is going. It is the JJ Virgin diet and I wrote about it on my blog. Any way - welcome to The Outlawz Hugz

PS!!! I love your art pages full of lots of things to look at with all the stamping and beautiful colors! I can imagine it would be hard working with the thin paper.

  2. Both these pages are fabulous! I particularly like the second one - I think it is the vivid colours I love. I am a novice at Art Journals so have not tips at all! xx

  3. Hi Vickie,
When I first started art journaling I had a cheap hard bound book and I ended up doing the same thing, glueing cardstock to the pages. I stumbled onto a Strathnore Mixed Media journal at Michael's and gave it a try. I love it! It is hardbound, spiral and 9 x 12. The pages are nice and thick and can take just about anything you can do to it, I know I think I have done it all to my journal. I think using Gesso also helps, expecially with the thinner pages. I went back and bought a sceond one for Zendoodling, and have since bought 2 more for my stash, as they were out of stock for a while. Last week I noticed they were back in stock, they cost about $15.00 but I always use the 40% off coupon and that brings them down to reasonable. So far it is the best one I have came across for art journaling. Hope this helps. I do love your pages, the colors on the second one are so vibrant!

    1. Hi Krisha this is a strathmore spiral 7x9" journal. Must be the next size up is heavier weight paper. The blue cover. I think I will go check out the one you mentioned and see how much heavier the paper is.

    1. They look more finished I think then the stuck in ones. Especially since I tend to do more dark or very bright colors and that whitish rim just doesn't get it!

  5. Lovely pages with some fabulous colour. Have you tried gesso? I gesso the pages of my thinner journals before adding colour. I have also glued 2 pages together when I know I am going to be using really wet mediums. Good luck, I'd be interested to know if you find a good solution, I think its something a lot of us journallers struggle with!

  6. Hi Vickie,

Very cool journal pages! I love the colors that you've used. I can see the difference in the pages and do like how the second photo looks. It's interesting how different weight papers absorb the mediums.

I noticed you've left comments on several WOYWW posts - are you joining in this week?

    Hugs,
    Kay

  7. Was just going to say about using Gesso but someone beat me to it. I have a thin paper journal and glue two pages together, let them dry then add a thin coat of Gesso - works for me. Love the
Intense colours on your second pages.

  8. I love your pages but know what you means about wrinkles on the paper - I have a cheap book it happens to and gesso or a thin layer of Snowflake Fresco paint (PaperArtsy) does the trick. Feel better soon Kim 110

  9. Love the colours on that second spread! When I've had thin pages to use I've done what you've done - stuck a couple of pages together. Either that or collage a full layer of paper on top before painting. Both give you a thicker substrate to work on. Hope you feel better soon.
