WOYWW #207 and OMG! It happened again!

It has been an interesting week around the Doswell house (hacienda) with all sorts of fun things going on!
  •  Last Thursday I taught a tag class at Scrap that and had a blast creating and chewing the fat with the girls in the class.
  • Friday saw Chuck and I meeting up with a group of Meteorology students from the University of South Alabama, Mobile,  for dinner before they headed home to Alabama after storm chasing a couple days.
  • Saturday I went to the movies with my daughter and saw The Great Gatsby...still an awesome book IMHO!  Such a social commentary of the times! If you get a chance go see it!
  • Sunday went out for a birthday celebration with my SIL for his ? birthday.
  • Monday we had severe thunderstorms and our house and tornadoes hit east of us!  We got pinged with some peas sized hail but didn't take any damage from it.
  • This part is the OMG! It happened again!  Tuesday we had more severe thunderstorms and Moore, OK was hit with another monster tornado!  The first one in 1999 was bad enough but this one may be worse in some ways.
Death toll is at 24 at this time and most are children who were in school!  DH was out storm chasing and here is a picture of what he saw.  Chuck said the noise from where he snapped this pic was horrific so think about what the folks up close heard!  More then scary!
(c) 2013 cdoswell This was taken looking west from one of the four schools that was hit by this tornado.  All the children at this school survived which wasn't so of the Plaza school.  Terrible loss!.
My daughter was also out in her back yard and took some pictures and footage!  Here is a link to her storm video.

We are all doing okay here at the hacienda and are uber thankful that it didn't hit closer to here either day.  This is the spring in Oklahoma and where some places put up with monsoons, hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions Mother Nature gives us the tornadoes and severe storms.  You learn to live with it and cope.  I would take this any day over any of the other options.

Okay moving forward to why I am really posting today...WOYWW!  Welcome to What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday!  We share desks and information from all over the world...lots of blog friends/and fiends and if you feel like you would like to share go visit with Julia at Stamping Ground and she will fill you in on how to participate.

Here it is folks without further ado...My Desk!
I am working on an art journal layout that I am not for sure where it is going or whether it is going anywhere.
I want to learn how to use watercolor pencils better and learn the differences in each brand.  I have Stampin'Up!, Prisma, and Inktensive watercolor pencils that I am playing with.  Each one has a lot of differences.  I watch a video on YouTube that talked about the differences but until I tried them myself I wasn't convinced!

As you can see from this close up picture the green is the Prisma and Stampin' Up! pencils and the paper was totally dry before using the Inktense blue green.  The inktense is definitely an ink in pencil form compared to the others.  The Stampin' Up! isn't as pigment intensive as either one of the other pencils but did well on the backgrounds.  The sunflower is a stamp from Stampin'Up! I used and colored with the pencils. I am planning on free handing some leaves and I think I will twist a vine around and across the pages and stamp some sentiments/messages.  I am also thinking I will use my Uniball white gel pen to define the petals on the sunflowers also...what do you think?

I still have a couple ATC I am willing to swap if you are!  Email me your address and I will send mine back to you!  It is WOYWW's 4th birthday is coming up next week so lets swap and celebrate the date!

Well guess that is it for me tonight.  I apologize (once again) for not making it around to a lot of the blogs that game to visit me.  I promise I will visit you this week and make up for it!

  1. Thank goodness you are ok and that you were missed by the tornado but how terribly sad for all those that got hit - and that school. It was terrible to see on tv, such devastation. I can't express how I feel, it's just awful to think about it.
Good to see you doing your crafting and research too - I am impressed.
    Hugs, Neet xx 2

  2. So glad you are alright, the pics we are seeing here are heartbreaking, those poor people in Moore. Love your flowers you are doing. Francesca #27

  3. I was in shock when I heard what had happened in Oklahoma, I am glad that you and yours are fine. My prayers go out to those that have suffered a terrible loss. I haven't done much art journaling this week, but I have been playing around with some canvas work. I am too thinking of getting some watercolour pencils, so I am interested in what you decide are the best for you. Happy WOYWW and have a great week.
    Janene #17

  4. I left a comment for Julia that you were OK because I could tell she was as worried as I had been earlier in the week. When I saw the shots of the destruction in Moore, it reminded me of Joplin two years ago. Such devastation.

I've heard those inktense pencils are fantastic. I have some very old pencils you scribble with, then add water to. I've tried to use them, but I don't get much out of them, especially since I'm not an artist/painter.

  5. So glad that you and you're are ok...but terribly sad about the loss of life. What amazing photos of the tornado, quite eerily terrifying......
Like your lovely flower crafting, bright, fab colours!
    Hugs, LLJ 40 xx

  6. I didn't want to believe the news first time I heard it my heart went out to all the people of America especially those who live in Moore. I haven't played with my watercolour pencils for ages I think you have inspired me to get them out again.
    Happy WOYWW

  7. How frightening to be so close to such an event.Glad you are ok. We heard an explanation of why such storms occur in your area.Such big very different air masses meet, and interact with much storm activity, and extreme low pressures.
    Judy #33

  8. So glad to hear you are ok and your family too, what a scary thing to happen, we dont get tornadoes here but I lived through cylones and hurricans in Fiji where I grew up
    Bridget #11

  9. So glad to hear you and yours are good and sending love to your fellow Oklahomans, it looked so scary on tv!

    Lisa #47

  10. So glad that you and your family are ok.. It looks so frightening and it was so huge.. The destruction was just horrible and just so terribly sad to hear of the loss of lives.
I have been playing around with watercolors and you really have to try them out yourself to see what the different ones are like, its half the fun all the experimentation.
    Sandy :) #38

  11. So glad you have been able to post and let us know you and the family are all ok looking at those pictures is was not so far away!!
    Jackie 8

  12. Terrible to hear what has happened but very glad to hear that you and your family are OK.

  13. Hi Vickie! I just called by to check you're OK, not via WOYWW as am too busy to play this week. Just so glad to see you're fine - Mother Nature at her worst.

    Hugs, Di xx

  14. Glad you and your family are all OK. Our thoughts go out to those not so lucky. Amazing photos. x Jo

  15. glad you are ok, the news reports here are just dreadful I feel for everyone involved. Nature can be so cruel.... on a happier note, what a lovely busy time you have had recently. Helen 5

  16. I am incredibly relieved to see your name on our list gal. Five miles is a near miss isn't it - I thank God for you. Will you let us know if there comes any sort of appeal that we might offer some practical help from afar? Loved the pics of the spring preparations at the hacienda - those raised beds are a triumph. Meanwhile, you sound like me - not convinced until you try..story of my life!

  17. Goodness, Vickie, that must have been really scary. Thank goodness you are all OK but we all feel for the people who have been so horribly effected. Nature can be a shocking thing!! Love and hugs to all.
    Happy WOYWW

  19. hello Vickie so pleased that you and family are safe. my heart goes out to ll affected by the tornado.
Beautiful sunflower. good to experiment, sadly I don't do enough of that. Happy WOYWW Anne x #74

  20. Oh Vickie we are all so glad to see you on here today and to know that you and your family are ok. Our hearts go out to all those effected by this dreadful weather.
Your desk and painting looks amazing it is great to see the difference in what is really the same product but made by someone else.
Sending hugs and hoping you have a great day
    Ria #74

  21. Hi Vickie, so glad that you were not in the damage areal. It was so nice to see that you mentioned Alabama. I am from West Alabama area. #93

  22. Glad to see that you and your family are safe. Those photos are terrifying. How close it was.
My thoughts are with those who are affected.
Glad you have been busy crafting. I haven't had time again this week.

  23. I too am glad you are okay. My prayers are going to those affected by the storms. Great flowers! You can really see a difference in the colors that are basically the same. Looking forward to our ATC swap! Happy WOYWW! Nan G #105

  24. Vickie, so glad you and yours are okay -- so sad for the people affected. I look at the pictures and the damage is so unbelievable. I think the white pen will look really nice with the colored pencils -- I'm impressed with the deep colors you got with the Inktense pencils. Happy WOYWW from Laura #107

  25. So glad you are safe and sound. The pictures have been amazing but scary at the same time. Praying for all in the area! Love your space as always. I'm not playing again this week but still like to look around!

  26. So glad you are all ok - was thinking about you when we heard.

Maybe you can answer a question Mr B raised - what makes you stay in an area where such awful destruction can happen with loss of life? Why not move to somewhere that doesn't have such awful natural disasters?

Hope you have a good week...

    Morti #72

  27. So glad you are okay Vickie. Gosh, the footage of neighborhoods is just incredible. I was bawling yesterday after seeing a video on FB of a woman being interviewed and her doggie crawling out from under the rubble. And the kids that are missing, so so sad!!!! The video your daughter took is amazing. What a storm!!! Your journal pages look great. I think the flowers would definitely stand out with the white gel pen. Happy WOYWW and no more storms for OK!! Brigita #113

  28. So glad you are okay Vickie, I immediately thought of you when I heard! I have been in tears watching the news footage, can't imagine what it is like for you in your own backyard!
loving the pencil work, I love to colour with pencils, prismas are my choice and I can't seem to go back to Copics!\

  29. So glad to hear that you've survived the tornado. We've been watching the news in the UK and just couldn't believe the devastation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected there.
I'm just starting to use my Prisma pencils and they do seem to be very good. Happy WOYWW. Pam#20

  30. Thanks for posting, so glad to know you are all ok. My heart goes out to all the people affected by this horrific storm. Hoping to see the movie, but things here are hectic once again. Hoping to get a post for this WOYWW yet today. Enjoy

  31. Glad to hear you and your family are well Vickie, can't imagine experiencing something that powerful and unstoppable. If I water colour I still like to do it with inks, not the pencils, but I did get a large set of Prisma's for Christmas and have been enjoying them very much.

    Brenda 100

  32. Hi Vicki, SO GLAD your safe. I have been through many tornadoes, as a kid in ND, and remember them well, even if I can't remember where I put my glasses. I do like my Inktense pencil for stronger color. I did the You Tube thing too, before I bought them. Your flower is beautiful!
    Krisha #50

  33. Hi Vickie,

Glad you and your family are safe. I have relatives around Oklahoma City and I've heard through FB that they are all safe. One of my cousin's husbands went over to Moore to help out. Bless.

The sunflower looks great. Interesting how watercolor pencils could vary from one brand to another. Guess it's the same as markers.

I have your mailing address for the ATC Swap - yay! Let me know if you need mine. Thanks for the visit already!

    Happy WOYWW!

  40. Well what a week you’ve had Vicki. I’m surprised that you found time for any crafting at all.
Can’t tell you how pleased I am to hear that you and your family are safe and well. I was watching toe footage on the news in disbelief and really feel for all those poor families who have lost loved ones and all their belongings.

    Stay safe.

  41. Love your desk, it looks so cosy and creative! The storms sound really scary. I hope you aren't in the danger zone for more tornadoes.
    Zildara #27

  42. Hi Vickie! Your events sounds lovely. The Great Gatsby...wooo! We have been praying for everyone in the Oklahoma storm path. We have friends in Tulsa and they have family in Ok. City. janet #18

  44. Wow, full post today, Vicky! First of all, we were all worried about you and praying for you, so it's wonderful to know you and your family are all right!

However, looking at your desk, are you sure the tornado missed you? (LOL ~ I couldn't resist!)

Thank you for that interesting watercolor pencil test you did!

I'd love to swap an ATC with you! I'll go over and email you my addie. Have a wonderful week and thanks for the earlier visit!! Darnell #64

  45. Oh my goodness, I looked at that video and I couldn't think of anything more scary. We don't have tornadoes here, thankfully. I'm so glad you are all okay, we've been watching it on the news and it's just unbelievable what damage they cause. On a brighter note, your pics are gorgeous. I have the inktense pencils and love the bright colours you get from them.
Have a great week and stay safe.
    Von #66

  47. Hi Vickie, so glad you and your family were not caught up in the devastation caused by the tornado. It's been all over the news here, and like many others, I cried to think of all those poor people affected.

Love your sunflowers - they are so colourful!

I haven't made any ATC's yet, and I am up to my neck in prep for moving house, and laid up with a duff knee (ligaments!) at a most inconvenient time! I would love to swap, but not sure yet if I wil be able to participate.

    happy woyww

    Debs #115

  48. Hi Vicki, pleased to hear all are well at your safe haven. The colours in the sunflowers are lovely. It always pays to have a try of different brands to see the effects. Sometimes you get a bargain but, it is always fun playing.
    Sandra @21

  49. I am so glad that you and your family are all ok.

I love your sunflower. I really enjoy working with my Inktense watercolor pencils. I used to paint with them all of the time but then started using chalk pastels. When I got my pencils out again last week I really had fun with them.

  50. Hi Vickie, Beautiful sunflower, I love the look that using white gel pen to highlight gives. My son bought me a full box set of the inktense pencils, though I have yet to use them to there full colourful capacity. If you haven't been inundated with ATC requests (yeah right) I would love to do a swap with you.
    Happy art making
    Hugs Lottie #132

  51. First of all I am super glad that you are OK, those storms were horrible. Secondly, give me a hurricane any day over a tornado or earthquake because we get plenty of notification of when a hurricane is threatening. Ya'll get no notice at all, I use to have nightmares about tornadoes when I was a kid, probably had something to do with The Wizard of Just wanted to say thank you so much for voting for me, it sure means a lot to have support! waving hi from the hills of North Carolina ♥

  52. Glad to hear your ok and it's a shame those stunning pictures cause so much disaster as they move through an area. Your journal pages look fanastic can't wait to see the finished product and if you want to trade still I'm avail lol but I'm sure your booked up
    hugs Nikki #9

  53. Those are great photos but the tornado was really scary. Glad to know that you are ok. Love how you use the water color pencils. The pages look wonderful ^_^

  56. I love the farm house collection Vicki I think your going to get a lot of pleasure using those goodies. Sorry to hear you've not been well again. Take care from jill #3
