WOYWW #187

Happy New Year and Happy WOYWW!

Welcome to the first Wednesday of 2013 and the first WOYWW of the new year.  What is WOYWW?  Well click on the link and it will take you to Stamping Ground and Julia where you will learn about all the fun we have each week visiting desks around the world!

Speaking of desks here is a picture of my desk this week.  It is a much neater and clearer place to crop.  I need to find some ink remover and adhesive release to clean up my desk and mat and I will be set to go again.

As one year ends and another year begins I sit here contemplating events and people that have occurred in my life that made me what I am today.  I used to find all sorts of things that I wanted to change or should I say reinvent to make me a different being!   I wanted to be thinner, taller, smarter, more beautiful, less needy, more giving, caring, helpful etc. and it was at this time of year when I would put together my plans for change!  So you say what happened to those plans?

I was locked in a no win situation and it never failed that in two, three, or four months down the line my good intentions would be for naught and I would be feeling guilty at once again proving what a failure I was!  This is the first year I don't have any New Years resolutions or plans to change who and what I am!  I think that I have reached a point in my life (thank heavens at 60 years) that I am comfortable in my skin and realize that it was a waste of time making myself into something I was not and that I wasn't a failure but a victim of the society in which we live.  If I like me and who I am why should I change to fit a mold I hear about on the news, in the ads, and around the town.  That's not to say I wouldn't like to be all the above things but they evidently don't mean enough to me to make me change.

Now that said you are probably wondering to yourself  what am I going to do in the new year?  I am going to take it one day at a time and prioritize what is most important to me and my family and accomplish those things that really matter.

In my crafting and art world I have some definite plans that I will be going ahead with starting this week.  One objective is to finally move the craft rooms, to use up a lot of that stash that I have been accumulating or at least cull out what I won't ever use.  I want to grow in my art so I signed up to take a course from Tamara Laporte called Life Book 2013 which starts today.  It is an online course that is 52 weeks long and has various artists to teach each week.  I took the course last year also and enjoyed it immensely learning a lot but didn't do as much as I would have liked (it was because I got lazy not Tam) so this year I signed up again.

Anyway that is me for today.  I am off to cruise around blog land and see what kind of desks and holidays people have to show this week.  Happy New Year!

  4. Funny how, as we grow a little older, we get more comfortable with ourselves. Glad to hear that you are not making resolutions and taking each day as it comes - a very good philosophy to have. And - a very nice, neat, tidy and very well organised desk! Hope you have fun with the course this year. Happy New Year Vickie, hope it goes really well for you. Anne x #7

  5. I think you are correct, as we mature we accept ourselves for who we are and heck, it would be pretty hard to change after all these years!! Looking forward to seeing your artwork over the coming months!! Happy new Year Annette #23

  10. Happy New Year Vickie, I think it's fantastic that you know feel comfortable in who you are. I would like to feel like that lol, I have to admit though, I was going to do a pile of resolutions but then decided for the first time that I wasn't going to make any big plans as I become hateful towards myself when I don't achieve them. The salt is removed when dry, it can't really stay on I don't think as the minute I lifted them up this morning the salt came flying off lol, it does look better with no salt. Happy Woyww :-) Hugs Kerry xxx

  11. Just popping in to say Hi. Hope the coming year is a good, creative and blessed one for you! I don't do New Year Resolutions any more, I've learn't that trying to change things in my own strength just leaves me feeling worse when it fails. One day at a time in faith........

  14. You are who you are and from what short time I have known you, you are beautiful inside and out, who cares about the flesh that we carry or the burdens that seem to hang around. Stay positive and take one day at a time and don't let the pain get you down, smile and kick it where it hurts the most. Good for you for signing up for the course if you enjoyed it last year then you will again. I made a few resolutions that will not be hard to keep, well lets hope not anyway. I think more time for me is important first.

    Happy New Year.

  15. Hi Vickie and thanks for your earlier visit. Everything you said I totally agree with, you reach an age where you don't want to take any c--p from anyone anymore and I find as I get older that I'm more intollerant of awful people so steer clear of them

  18. Love your post- I suppose one of the benefits of getting older (I'm only just behind you at 58 this year), is not necessarily getting wiser, but getting more realistic!, and realising which is the important stuff and which is just 'fluff'. Reading what you wrote really resonates- we spend so much time setting ourselves up to fall down, and then blame ourselves for failing, rather than admiring ourselves for even trying at all! Just finishing the craft room move & de-clutter. Keep looking at random stuff and wondering 'what was I thinking?' when I bought it ,lol.Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz #41 xx

  19. I never make resolutions, it just make you feel rubbish when you fail in them. Instead make goals, like learn to cook something new, go for a hike into the lake district, if you don't manage it no big deal but you will manage allot of the goals!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi Vickie and a Happy New Year to you too. Thanks for the visit and here's to a better 2013 with lots of crafty fun and less worries. I always get disappointed setting targets and not achieving so tend to take each day as it comes....any crafting being an added bonus!
    Hugs and best wishes, Erika.

  21. Hi Vickie, haven't popped by for a while. Thank goodness that I am not the only person with a craft sheet that looks like that!! Don't believe in resolutions, they never last but the new year is a good time to take stock. Enjoy your course, I was very tempted (I've done one of Tam's before) but know I don't have the time to commit and it will frustrate me not to keep up, I just can't be laid back about these things. The tutor line up is waaaay impressive though. Happy New Year, Cindy #60

  28. Such a great post, it's true I think once you find 'you' the rest becomes less important. I have got there over the last few years and accepted me and am comfortable with who I am. I suppose life leads us on a journey and at times the bad stuff makes us recognise the good stuff and little things become just as important! Now, in my late 30's and now that I am disabled, I am so much more happy with life than I was when I was in my early 20's & not affected by my conditions! Anyway Happy New Year to you! Here's hoping that 2013 is a super year for us all. Take care Zo xx 69

  31. Thanks for calling round Vickie, I'm just back form a bit of shopping (bought a new journal).
"wanted to be thinner, taller, smarter" - been there, done that, now I'm with you on taking it one day at a time and being happy with who I am and what I look like.

  33. Hi Vickie, I couldn't have put it better myself - I've been down the wanting to be 'thinner, taller, smarter' etc., road so many times in the past thinking, I suppose, that I would somehow become more acceptable and lovable than I really am, if only I tried harder. Now, I'm happier to simply be me and get on with living - it must be something to do with being at an age where you know that there are fewer years ahead than there is behind so better to make the most of what's left. Love your neat and tidy desk - it's just ready for creating with all that lovely stash you speak of. Wishing you a happy, healthy and prosperous year and I look forward to reading more of your posts throughout the year. Elizabeth x #54

  34. Yep, with you there on the 'impossible dreams' front. It's time to concentrate on the ones that can come true. So impressed with your desk. My craft mat could do with a good clean too but just know it isn't gonna happen:) Have a very much happier and healthier 2013 sweetie. Hugs, Jenny #47

  35. Hi Vickie,

Oh, I know what you mean. I honestly thought I wouldn't make "resolutions" this year -- more like goals.... Ah well, we'll see how I do. I definitely need to make some lifestyle changes due to health (I KNOW you can relate).

I also am hoping to stretch my creative wings. I packed away my mousetraps (couldn't let a prospective buyer see THOSE) but maybe I'll dig them out for our swap. I'll let you know when that happens!!

Thank you for being a great blogging buddy!

    Hugs,
    Kay

  36. I can't remember the last time I made a resolution. Gave up when I was disappointed in myself for not keeping them.Love your clear desk and now you are c leaning it as well - my oh my - that is a spring time event for me.
Look forward to seeing what you create over the next year, love the things you do. Take care and have a wonderful year. Thanks for being a blogging friend.

  37. You are right...if I move the cricut scoot things around a bit I could squish ion a 4th person!

I don't make the typical silly resolutions either. just make a mental note to try a different focus on things...like this year, I plan to curb my consumable scrappy spending and focus more on non consumables. Another is to join more challenges that encourage me to use my stash.

Look forward to visitng you again soon...scrappymo#21

  38. I agree whole-heartedly with your sentiment. If people don't like you how you are it's their loss, not yours. Be true to yourself, I've always said that. Nice to see a clear desk for a change Vickie!! Hope you're busy creating though! Have a wonderful 2013, make it a positive year.

  39. I love your new found attitude to New Year resolutions and life. Good on you! I totally agree with you and the wisdom of it comes with age... it came to me too! Each day can be filled with what you want and what you enjoy and why not! Make the most of it as you worked all your life to get to this state.
Apologies Vickie that I missed off Sunshine's pic but it has been amended now. I love her, she really is a breath of Spring. Thank you so much for joining in the swap, (glad you enjoyed it) and also for your unexpected generosity in also sending such lovely craft items too. Much appreciated and they are so usable, once I can make myself stop stroking them!!!!

  44. Hi Vickie your past resolutions sound just like mine used to be. I've wasted many years wishing I was all those things. I haven't made any this year. I do have some things I would like to achieve some small some big. Not going to beat myself up about what I can't achieve. Also need to like myself as I am. 45. Hi Vickie - Happy New Year to you !
Your post made me smile - so many big thoughts -so little will power - the story of my life !!
And yet maybe in the very statement of saying you are not going to change yourself - there you are changed !!
Into being a vibrant, creative woman, with a fun sense of humour that comes over on your blog and a lovely messy inky craft mat to witness a life well led with your creativity and the warmth of spirit to share it with us all !!
Go girl ! No need for change if you ask me !

  48. Great non-resolutions. I think I've hit that point in my life to. This is me, you get what you get. I like your idea of expanding your art and decluttering the stash. I'm working on that last one myself. I have made some progress, not a lot, but the neat part is I can tell when I am digging around for stuff that there is less to go through and things tend to be where I think they are. It is wonderful so I hope you can achieve that goal. I like the nice clean desk sitting there ready for you to play!

  50. Great Post!! I agree that by 60 (I'll be 63 in May) that if it hasn't happened by now, it isn't going to. I'm just happy I am who I a anymore and don't plan on changing for anybody. Love my craft time and my blogging friends. Yes I do need to clear out some old stuff, but am not going to feel like I failed if it is still there next year at this time....LOL

  56. Thank for your comment on birdy tag. I know I can't believe how fantastic they look now. I have done a tutorial on how I did this with loads of close up pictures over on http://shopatthatcraftplace.blogspot.co.uk/ it's the same ones but really close pictures if you would like a closer look. Next time I am going to try adding less salt for softer backgrounds and see how that works, but I have to admit the bright colours of the birdy tag has certainly cheered me up from all the rain we have been having :-)

  58. Just got back around & scrolled down to read this post! How honest you were and ALSO how very true...not just of yourself but all of us! I always say I had to get to be an old lady to not value other opinions more than my own. That's not to say I don't consider what I'm told...I do, but I don't feel I have to take it to change ME! If you don't like me, and I hope you will, that's YOUR loss, 'cause I've developed into a pretty nice person. (Rhetorical YOU!LOL). I try to do what I think is the right & decent thing, treat folks as I wish to be treated, be respectful, kind if I can, love my family, and do what I enjoy. I earned the right after working so long. So I admire & agree with your New Year's thoughts, and you expressed them so well. Ahem...like your space too! You gotta lotta stuff, but you have it tidy. Love the wallpaper background (or border - whatever it's called) on your blog! Thanks for sharing...craftiness & wisdom too!
